AN ancient woodland will be preserved, thanks to the generosity of a Durham firm.
Premier Waste Management, based at Aykley Heads, Durham City, has donated £210,000 to Durham Wildlife Trust to renovate Milkwellburn Wood, in the Derwent Valley.
The donation, which was made through the County Durham Environmental Trust, uses landfill tax collected on waste deposited at Premier’s Blaydon landfill site Milkwellburn Wood is home to rare wildlife species, as well as endangered wildflowers.
Steve Scott, chief executive at Premier Waste Management, said: “Our corporate social responsibility is extremely important to the company and we saw Milkwellburn Wood as an unprecedented opportunity to increase the biodiversity in the region.
“We’re delighted that the trust can now begin its renovations to preserve such a historic environmental site.”
