A SUPPORT group for the parents of epileptic children aged up to three has been launched at Pelton. Small Steps – Seize the day, at One Point Pelton Children’s Centre for parents of children under three with epilepsy. Has been started by mums Judith Roberts and Kate Griffin. Their daughters, Ava Mae and Niamh (respectively), both born in November 2010, have epilepsy and the mothers felt they needed to help families in the same position as them. Ms Griffin said: "My reason for being part of setting up Small Steps – seize the day is that awareness of epilepsy is limited. "People do not understand how serious the condition is. I also want to help families not to feel as alone and as isolated as I did, if we can help even just one family I know all our hard work will be worthwhile." Ms Roberts said: "The group attracts between four and eight families each fortnight and we have 12 members in our online community, including families from America and Australia. "Closer to home families from Liverpool and Birmingham have also been in touch and have said that unfortunately they do not have access to this type of peer support. "To make contact with those further afield we are organising a trip to Cadbury’s World in Birmingham." The mums , from Chester-le-Street and Consett, have also organised a packed diary of events for epilepsy sufferers and their families including a masquerade ball in September. The women are aiming to raise money to help to support parents of young children with epilepsy, to pay for respite care, trips or something as simple as arranging to have household tasks done. Contact details and further information about the group can be found on their website www.seizetheday-smallsteps.com
